Responsibilities and functions
Founded in 1962, the University of Trento has focused on building alliances and complementarities with Italian and foreign institutions and organisations. In 1982, the Free University of Trento was transformed into a state university, with a statute guaranteeing powers of self-government.
The Milan Agreement, signed in 2009 between the Government and the Autonomous Province of Trento (together with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Region), on the modification of the special Statute of Autonomy on the subject of financial regulations, recognised new competences to the Province with regard to the University and represented a further important step in the development of the University, guaranteeing certainty and adequacy in the allocation of financial resources.
Over 16,000 students, around 700 lecturers and researchers and the same number of technical and administrative staff: the numbers speak of a university that offers an ideal environment for study and research.

Research infrastructures
A decisive role in the Trentino research and innovation system is played by Research Infrastructures (IR), which can be traced back to laboratories or facilities with a high scientific and technological profile.
They represent incubators of scientific and technological knowledge and nuclei of aggregation between the worlds of research and enterprise.
Among the laboratories that structurally reflect the characteristics of an IR is the Centre for Integrated Biology (CIBIO) at the University of Trento:
- IRBIO (Research Infrastructure for Integrated Biology of the University of Trento), dedicated to biotechnology for human health or red biotechnology
