National Strategy Inner Areas - Val di Sole

Mission 5 - Component 3 - 1.1 National strategy for internal areas

Creating a link between the S.S. 42 and Mestriago in the Municipality of Commezzadura, in order to improve accessibility to the village

General information

The project concerns the internal area of Val di Sole and in particular the creation of a connection, in the Municipality of Commezzadura, between the S.S. 42 and Mestriago in order to improve accessibility to the village.

At present, the S.S. 42 in the Municipality of Commezzadura is set at a higher altitude than the town's height, becoming a visual and functional barrier.
To reach the activities located on the south side of the Noce stream, one must therefore enter the hamlet of Mestriago, creating traffic in the built-up area (near the school and the civic centre).

Specifically, it is planned to lower the S.S. 42 to the level of the village of Mestriago and to create a roundabout, on the same state road, where the state and municipal roads will converge.

In addition, a cycle-pedestrian subway will be built to the new S.S. 42, in correspondence with the space in front of the Town Hall, so as to guarantee the passage of pedestrians and cyclists through a wide ramp that will lead to the level of the existing bridge and thus to the connection with the cycle track, which continues along the valley.

With the realisation of this intervention, therefore, the objectives of improving the conditions for the protection of public safety and reducing environmental pollution within the built-up area of Mestriago are also achieved.

Assuming the current carriageway bridge is maintained, the roundabout envisaged by the project will be located at the current 'via per Daolasa' subway and will have four main exits and one secondary exit:

  1. the entrances and exits to S.S. 42 (to the east and west);
  2. access to Daolasa, Almazzago and the cableway (to the south);
  3. the access to Mestriago (to the north), shifted od the west with respect to the current road and the Town Hall, to allow the creation of a square as a meeting place for the community
  4. safe access to the Rafting Centre area (secondary exit, to the west).

The current west entrance to the village, near the school, will only become a safe exit for those continuing on the main road.
The current entrance east of the village will only become an entrance for residents.

The development of the road on which the intervention will be carried out is approximately 450 m.
The width of the roadway will be 7.50 m, with 2 lanes of 3.50 m in each direction and bituminised 0.25 m wide pavements on each side. The diameter of the roundabouts will be approximately 50.00 m.

Goals

Improve and increase the safety of mobility and accessibility of the internal areas of Val di Sole.

The project will provide social support by improving the viability of the municipalities involved, especially for weak categories (pedestrians and cyclists).

The intervention aims at removing traffic from the village, while creating alternatives for the most at-risk users (elderly, children, women with prams)

The project combines two objectives present in the PNRR (National Plan for Recovery and Resilience) and the PNC (National Plan for Complementary Investment): supporting the so-called 'inland areas' and improving the accessibility and safety of roads.

While road safety is the main objective, a prominent role will also be given to reducing pollution and reorganising roads that are also useful for the development of tourism in the area.

Target: contribute to the national target of 2,000 km of roads in inland areas.

Monitoring

For the Commezzadura-Mestriago-Daolasa intersection redevelopment work, the integrated tender was published on 6 July 2023 and awarded on 29 November 2023.

The Road and Railway Works Service-APOP of the Autonomous Province of Trento has approved the technical-economic feasibility project (PFTE) for the intervention to improve the Commezzadura-Mestriago-Daolasa intersection in Val di Sole.

The intervention is part of Investment 1 'Allocation and utilisation of funds for safety and extraordinary maintenance of the road network for accessibility' within Mission 5 Component 3 of the PNC, the National Plan of Complementary Investments to the PNRR.

The total tender amount, including design and execution of works, is EUR 1,915,378.74, of which EUR 80,000.00 are safety charges not subject to rebate.

The start of the works is estimated by September 2024, with an estimated execution time of 360 days.
