Health, environment, biodiversity and climate - SINTESI project

Mission 6 - Component 1

The SINTESI (Contaminated Sites of National Interest, Territory, Equity, Surveillance, Intervention) project involves the development and evaluation of the effectiveness of primary and secondary prevention interventions to reduce the health impact of diseases attributable to the environment and social inequalities.

General information

SINTESI is a project financed with resources from the National Plan for Complementary Investments (PNC) under Programme E.1 'Health, Environment, Biodiversity and Climate', investment 1.2 'Development and implementation of 2 specific pilot operational programmes for the definition of integrated health-environment-climate intervention models in selected contaminated sites of national interest'.

Goals

The project aims to set up a permanent environmental and health surveillance system in contaminated sites (SIN) in which the available environmental and epidemiological knowledge enables the structuring of targeted interventions for the primary and secondary prevention of adverse health effects associated with contamination, with a view to combating inequalities.

The project is divided into the following nine specific objectives

  1. Recognition of available data on socio-economic context and sources of environmental pressure, environmental contamination in the different matrices, population exposure, health profile, description of the health offer and consumption of services;
  2. Design/consolidation of epidemiological surveillance tools and descriptive epidemiology data, with trend analysis (calendar and cohort effect) also considering socio-economic deprivation data;
  3. Analytical study design to assess/update the association between environmental exposures, socio-economic position and health outcomes in the general population and in vulnerable groups (residential population cohorts and birth cohorts); case-control studies in selected SINs; investigation of exposure to environmental pollution in schools;
  4. Description of socio-economic differentials in exposure to environmental risk factors, associated health outcomes and access to health services;
  5. Setting up a web portal of the Permanent Environment and Health Surveillance System for transparent and timely communication of environmental, epidemiological and contextual data;
  6. Establishment of inter-sectoral tables with the participation of citizenship for the identification of priority health needs and environmental remediation priorities;
  7. Participatory design of territorial intervention and risk management plans for the reduction of exposure differentials, through area environmental and health impact assessments and the construction of alternative decision-making scenarios, to support strategic planning for sustainable development of the site;
  8. Design of an active health surveillance programme on the most exposed and vulnerable groups;
  9. Design of studies to assess the effectiveness of the programme in terms of adherence/extension and efficacy in relation to health objectives, also from the point of view of combating social inequalities, and transferability to other SINs.
