Responsibilities and functions
The Monte Baldo Local Nature Park occupies the northern sector of Monte Baldo.
It encompasses territories belonging to five different municipalities in the lower Trentino region and a range of protected areas located at altitudes varying from a few hundred metres above sea level to over 2000 metres.
It boasts a very varied landscape: snow-capped peaks, alpine pastures, impervious cliffs, extraordinary views of Lake Garda, meadows with splendid blooms, even rare ones, and beech forests rich in biodiversity.
By virtue of its extraordinary biodiversity, the Monte Baldo Park has been a popular destination for naturalists, apothecaries and pharmacists since the 15th century, so much so that it was called "Hortus Italiae', Garden of Italy. Francesco Calzolari celebrated the presence on Baldo of "...so many varieties of plants as in no other part of Italy".
Baldo has, in fact, for centuries been an ideal place for collecting medicinal species and for research in the field of botany. Even today it offers visitors countless possibilities for nature excursions from spring to late autumn, thanks to the mild climate. In winter, the tourist offer focuses on snow sports.
From 2019, the rooms of Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi in Brentonico will house the Monte Baldo Local Nature Park House. The visitor centre aims to enhance the protected areas of Monte Baldo from an educational and recreational perspective, thus enhancing the active conservation and environmental protection measures as cornerstones of the Park.
Established in 2008 as the Brentonico Network of Reserves, it was subsequently extended to the neighbouring municipalities (Ala, Avio, Mori, Nago-Torbole). In 2013 it obtained the designation of Local Nature Park, as provided for by Provincial Law 11/07.
It was among the first Networks of Reserves to renew its commitments in 2022 with a nine-year convention.
