Ranked 1st for economic and social impact according to the results of the latest ANVUR research quality assessment.
The Foundation has been active since 1 March 2007 and takes over the legacy of the Istituto Trentino di Cultura, which was the brainchild of Bruno Kessler, a far-sighted local administrator and founder of the University of Trento.
Established by law by the Autonomous Province of Trento, FBK is a private entity of an associative nature and derives its most important funding from the Programme Agreement signed with the Autonomous Province of Trento.
There are 2 poles; science and humanities
Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Via S. Croce, 77 in Trento
Science and technology pole in Via Sommarive, 18 in Povo in the Trento hills
In the 2 poles there are 11 research centres dedicated to technology and innovation and to the humanities and social sciences, over 400 researchers, more than 140 students involved in doctoral programmes, a Laboratory for micro and nano fabrication and design/production of silicon devices; numbers that allow FBK to aim for excellence in Italy and in Europe.

It is ranked 1st for scientific excellence in 3 different subject areas (ICT, History and Sociology) and for economic and social impact according to the ANVUR results of the research quality assessment for the period 2010-2014.
Research infrastructures
A decisive role in the Trentino research and innovation system is played by Research Infrastructures (IR), which can be traced back to laboratories or facilities with a high scientific and technological profile.
They represent incubators of scientific and technological knowledge and nuclei of aggregation between the worlds of research and enterprise.
Among the laboratories that structurally reflect the characteristics of an IR in FBK are:
- MNF (Micro-Nano Characterization and Fabrication Facility or clean room), dedicated to micro/nanotechnologies
