On the morning of Wednesday, 22 December, the new wing of the 'Nicolò d'Arco' secondary school was inaugurated. It is the result of a major extension and seismic upgrade.
The new wing was added to the pre-existing building and develops on the east side, towards the Sarca river, which flows a short distance away. There are three floors; basement, ground and first. On the ground and first floors there are eight classrooms (four on each floor) varying in size from 56 to 59 square metres, which can be joined together by means of movable partitions. In addition to the battery of bathrooms, divided into boys' and girls' with both having a service for people with disabilities, flexible spaces (inter-cycle classrooms) have been created along the corridors as places for socialising or for individual study or group work. The corridor ends with the exit to the safe place required by fire regulations, with the covered external staircase leading to the ground floor. The basement houses the new assembly hall, which can seat up to 200 people, which also allows for outdoor use, totally independent of the school opening, with its own toilets, which are at the service of the canteen users during school hours. Access, in addition to from inside the school, can be from the garden, onto which the assembly hall overlooks through a large window, where the escape routes required by the regulations on public entertainment venues are located. With regard to the distribution of spaces, the modular layout allows for the temporary two-by-two amalgamation of classrooms and the aggregation of workshop spaces for group activities, thanks also to the easily transformable furniture and equipment. The 'Nicolò d'Arco' secondary school now houses 22 classes and 482 students; the entire Istituto comprensivo houses 1380 students in 66 classes.
