'The prison is overcrowded and we have few officers. We have asked the undersecretary for justice Andrea Ostellari to intervene as soon as possible on the part of the ministry because the current prisoner numbers are far from the 240 agreed in 2002 with the agreement between the province and the ministry on the construction of the new prison in Spini di Gardolo'.
This was stated by the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti on the sidelines of the meeting.
"Today there are 348 inmates against 174 prison officers," Fugatti recalled, "when 227 were planned. Undersecretary Ostellari said he was interested in the problem, I invited him to visit the prison in Trento, and he assured that he would put a visit to the Trento facility on the agenda as soon as possible".
'Prisons cannot be a world apart: neither for the convicted nor for those who work in them,' said Undersecretary Ostellari, 'it is necessary to guarantee the full security of the prison officers and not to add a further sentence to those who are already serving one. The funds allocated to Justice should not be considered a cost, but an investment for the security and development of the country'.
