Tomorrow, 21 March, is World Down Syndrome Day, established in 2011 by the United Nations with the aim of raising awareness about Down Syndrome, breaking down the prejudices and stereotypes still present in society and promoting a culture of inclusive diversity.
"Compared to the past, awareness in our society has greatly increased and people with Down Syndrome can now count on numerous opportunities thanks to which they are an active part of our community and protagonists of life paths in which they can experiment their autonomy - the words of the provincial councillor for disability Stefania Segnana -. The steps forward made, however, are only the beginning of a path that is still to be written and in which, around the person with disabilities, families, third sector organisations, institutions and services, and the entire community play a fundamental role. It is a necessary team game, in which each actor, according to his or her own competence, is called upon to accompany persons with Down Syndrome on their path to an autonomous life, to support them in moments of difficulty, and to offer tools and opportunities to make the most of the resources they have to offer the community'.
