Beyond economics, the Festival hosts a debate on transcendence, between science and faith

What is meant by 'transcendent'? Is it something necessarily linked to faith? The answer, negative, is entrusted to the debate between philosopher Massimo Donà, mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi and Father Enzo Fortunato. "Transcendence is not outside of materiality, it is going beyond," says Odifreddi. "I therefore mean, for the individual, going beyond what one is, with projects and changes, but for the community, for what is so widely represented here at the Trento Festival of Economics, going beyond a vision linked to the economy, to Eurocentrism, to production at all costs, trying to look at the world from the outside, from afar.

Italy's role in an industrial policy capable of responding to global challenges

"Today more than ever, I believe that an industrial policy is necessary, also in view of global geopolitical and geo-economic phenomena, and with regard to the objectives that we as the European Union have set ourselves of the ecological and digital transition". This is how the Minister for Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso at the Teatro Sociale opened the dialogue with Sole 24 Ore journalist Carmine Fotina on a pivotal issue for the future of our country. Taking the United States as an example, which has implemented a number of strategic state measures to encourage the return of production and investment, thus responding to the systemic Chinese challenge, Europe and Italy should also have 'a significant, clear and assertive industrial policy', capable of responding to the challenges of China and embarking on a common path parallel to and not in opposition to the USA. "I will speak about this next Thursday in Washington," Urso announced from the stage of the Trento Festival of Economics.

Economist Zamagni: 'Inequalities are worse than poverty'

For the Trento Festival of Economics in Palazzo Geremia, a multi-voice meeting on the relationship between profit and non-profit civil economy (based among other things on the principles of reciprocity and fraternity) and social sustainability. Economist Stefano Zamagni outlined an overview. "Today inequalities are worse than poverty," he said, "because they create destabilisation of both the economic and political order. They are, consequently, a factor of strong social unease'. Zamagni went on to argue that 'the state-market economic model can no longer function. Instead, it is necessary to replace it with the State-market-community triad inspired by the principle of circular subsidiarity'. On environmental degradation, he said: "We have destroyed the environment because there has been confusion between growth and development".

Generational changeover in family businesses: strategy or luck?

Opinions on how to achieve the perfect generational handover in family businesses, allowing them a certain longevity in the panel dedicated to the Trento Festival of Economics are divided. If for Fabio Corsico, professor at the Luiss Business School University, and for those who have had virtuous experiences such as Sergio Marullo of Corndojanni, ceo of Angelini Industries, entrepreneur Francesco Micheli, and Giovanni Tamburi of TIP, the success of the operation lies "in a quality transfer, which passes on the 'entrepreneurial essence', before genetics, and is therefore based on rules other than blood", Massimo Ponzellini thinks very differently. For the honorary president of the European Investment Bank, in fact, the essence is all 'in luck, because an entrepreneur worthy of the name is difficult to reproduce'.

The business of data: between artificial and real intelligence

"The data business can be compared to that of black gold, oil: there is a search and extraction phase, followed by a necessary refining phase. Data alone today do not speak, we need algorithms that can 'clean' them and computing power that can connect different sources. Sensors are in fact an important part of the value chain. Data, computing power and sensors are a whole row that makes artificial intelligence real'. This was the metaphor proposed by the new president of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Ferruccio Resta, and which characterised the meeting dedicated to the business of data and its use, organised today, Saturday 27 May, as part of the Trento Festival of Economics at Palazzo Geremia.
