Genetic analyses carried out by the Edmund Mach Foundation laboratories have made it possible to establish the identity of the bear accompanied by a cub that, at dawn on Sunday, chased two hikers in the Roncone woods. It is F36, a 6-year-old specimen whose identification code appears in the Trentino Forestry Corps' monitoring. So far, the specimen had not behaved in a way that could be classified as problematic. Having ascertained the reaction assumed by the animal on the occasion of the close encounter, which could be classified as an attack, the President of the Province, Maurizio Fugatti, decided to capture it for radio-collaring. In the light of the further investigations foreseen, the consequent measures may follow, including that of culling. In the meantime, the operations aimed at capturing the MJ5 specimen, which last March had attacked a person in Val di Rabbi, continue: an activity made complex by the nature of the animal, which makes long movements in a short time.
