Yesterday afternoon, in the Trentino Room of the Province's headquarters building, the 37th Conference of Minorities was held, chaired by the Provincial Councillor for Education, Universities and Culture and attended by the head of the Local Linguistic Minorities Service and PAT European Audit. Representatives of the Ladin, Mòchena and Cimbrian minority communities were in attendance.
On the agenda, the current situation of minority television and radio information, also following the switch-off of the TML channel in February 2022, which carried broadcasts dedicated to the local historical linguistic minorities.
It will soon be possible to see the ORF 1 and ORF Sport channels from Trentino: the first, with a generalist vocation, ensures the broadcasting of "Südtirol heute", and therefore information and content of interest in German, for the benefit of German-speaking minorities; the second, as a channel dedicated to the main sporting competitions, also at world level, represents a support for the dissemination of sporting practice and in particular of the German language among the Trentino population.
The regulations for the protection of historical linguistic minorities, in fact, prescribe that the right to have both written and audiovisual information in the language of each community, in the areas to which they belong and to ensure, through radio and television broadcasts, the promotion of the cultural characteristics of the Ladin, Mòchena and Cimbrian populations, must be guaranteed. In this direction, the mandatory, non-binding opinion of the Conference of Minorities was acquired for the activation of a contract with EI Towers, the sole assignee of the frequencies for the Trentino Alto Adige basin, which provides for the retransmission of the signal of the Austrian broadcaster ORF in the reference areas of the German-speaking minorities and in the rest of the provincial territory.
