Uto Ughi enchants Trento: a symphony to celebrate 160 years of Il Sole 24 Ore

A violin that moves, an orchestra that accompanies, an illuminated stage in the heart of Trento. This evening, the Auditorium Santa Chiara hosted one of the most intense moments of the Fuori Festival programme: the concert 'Economia in Musica: il viaggio sonoro di Uto Ughi' (Economy in Music: Uto Ughi's sound journey), realised to celebrate two important anniversaries, the 160th anniversary of Il Sole 24 Ore and the 20th anniversary of the Trento Festival of Economics.
The event, realised in collaboration with the Uto Ughi Foundation, aimed to bring classical music to a wide and transversal audience, also through a morning preview addressed to students: a moment of listening and education, where music becomes an instrument of education and discovery. The evening had a special introduction with the presentation of the 'Opinion Reader' campaign, designed to tell the story of the bond between Il Sole 24 Ore and its community of readers. On stage, the eight reader protagonists were unveiled, chosen from hundreds of candidates who responded to the call to action launched by the newspaper in February.

The hour of truth: the Middle East

As part of the 20th edition of the Festival, the cycle of geopolitics panels 'The Hour of Truth' continues. After the first meetings on Europe and Trump, today it is time to take stock of the Middle East. A context that has never been so much the focus of international attention as it is today, between the horror that is unfolding in Gaza and new balances that are emerging also as a result of the Trump administration's policies. Paolo Magri, president of ISPI, Valeria Talbot, head of ISPI's Middle East and North Africa Observatory, and Pejman Abdolmohammadi, professor of International Relations in the Middle East at the University of Trento, spoke about it in the Philharmonic Hall.

Why the current model of artificial intelligence development may not be sustainable

Artificial intelligence, and in particular generative intelligence, can bring many improvements to our lives. But it can also have a negative impact, especially on certain sections of the population. The implications, both positive and negative, of the new technology were addressed in the meeting 'Why the current model of artificial intelligence development may not be sustainable', moderated this afternoon by Vittorio Carlini, journalist for Il Sole 24 Ore, at the Teatro Sociale as part of the Trento Festival of Economics programme.

Fair winds and global storms: industry testing the future

At the heart of an ever-changing world, the Trento Festival of Economics hosted the panel 'Uncertainties of geopolitics and industrial strategies', offering an opportunity to reflect aloud on how European industry can move between global crises, technological revolutions and the redefinition of trade balances. Giving rhythm and depth to the discussion was the expert voice of Giulia Crivelli (Il Sole 24 Ore), who intertwined personal reflections and targeted questions to four authoritative voices from the world of business and academia: Donato Iacovone (Executive Chairman of BIP), Sergio Marullo di Condojanni (CEO of Angelini Industries), Giovanni Tamburi (Chairman and CEO of TIP - Tamburi Investment Partners) and Giuliano Noci (Pro-rector of the Milan Polytechnic).

Autonomy that makes the country system grow: the Calderoli, Fugatti, Kompatscher dialogue

The Autonomy of Trentino Alto Adige as an example of virtuous resource management and a model for other territories seeking greater levels of self-government. The specificity of mountain areas, which need special attention, throughout the country, an area that Trentino, for example, is enhancing with targeted initiatives on certain territorial indicators, from depopulation to high levels of tourism. Without forgetting the 'hot' topics of the debate, from the third term of governors to the debate on LEP - essential levels of services - connected to the reform of differentiated Autonomy.
Many are the knots that run between central and local levels touched upon in the panel 'Autonomies and National States' at the Trento Festival of Economics. The protagonists were Roberto Calderoli, Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies, and the Presidents of the Autonomous Provinces of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, and Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher. The host was Sebastiano Barisoni, journalist and presenter of Radio 24, who did not fail to press the guests on the most topical issues.

Brain drain: can the country still attract its young talent?

A net loss of around 97,000 graduates: this is the latest figure for the negative migration balance between those leaving and those arriving in our country. And it is the incipit of a lively dialogue of prominent guests from the academic, industrial and trade union world, who, supported by the direct experience of a young student, gave an overview of the employment situation in Italy. Between the demographic crisis and the challenges of attractiveness for the new generations, internal precariousness and poor economic and career recognition, young people are looking elsewhere for what seems to be lacking here. But there are also tools, examples and policies that can reverse the trend: a profound rethink of the country's social and productive model is urgently needed.

Innovation and merit in public administrations

Innovation, but also training, because the 'value of an organisation grows hand in hand with the value of the people that make it up', merit so that employees can grow if they demonstrate adequate performance, and a reorganisation that goes beyond the concept of a 'fixed position' and instead aims to motivate people. These were the key points of the speech by the Minister for Public Administration, Paolo Zangrillo, who participated in the Trento Festival of Economics at the Palazzo della Regione a short while ago in the meeting: 'The State machine to the test of innovation and merit'. Among the audience was also the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, while in conversation with the minister was Gianni Trovati, a journalist from Il Sole 24 Ore, who prompted Zangrillo to comment on the unions' unwillingness to sign the local authorities' contract. "The government has allocated a total of 20 billion to finance the renewal of contracts, never in the history of the Republic have so many resources been allocated," the minister clarified.

Power, data and the technological future at the centre of the debate

Not just economic actors, but holders of real and pervasive power, capable of influencing markets, opinions and governments. These are the large technology platforms controlled by (a few) digital giants, at the centre of the panel "Big tech after the rise of Musk", hosted today in the Sala Filarmonica as part of the 20th Trento Festival of Economics. Under the lens, the new global balance between technology, democracy, education and data sovereignty. The meeting was opened by Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, chairman of Intesa Sanpaolo, in dialogue with Il Sole 24 Ore journalist Luca De Biase. This was followed by a round table discussion featuring Paolo Boccardelli, Rector of Luiss Guido Carli University, Michele Boldrin, economist at Washington University in Saint Louis, and Alberto Sangiovanni Vincentelli, Professor Emeritus of UC Berkeley.

Four protagonists from the business world on family capitalism in Europe, between identity and generational transition

In the setting of the Trento Festival of Economics, Gerardo Braggiotti, Fabio Corsico, Ian Gallienne and Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño, with Il Sole24Ore journalist Marigia Mangano, opened the panel 'Family Capitalism and New European Frontiers' by emphasising how family businesses are an economic and cultural pillar in our continent. Among the topics that emerged were the importance of planning for the generational transition and the need for clear and sustainable governance models. The ability of these enterprises to adapt to global market transformations while maintaining their identity was also discussed. The comparison between the European model, based on legacy and family continuity, long-term vision and identity, and the American model, based on performance, managerialism and meritocracy, allowed for valuable reflection on the possible hybridisations and innovations of family entrepreneurship in the future.

Calderone: 'Technology can also make a difference in the world of work'

The challenges and opportunities of today's labour market were the focus of the meeting in the Depero Hall with the Minister for Labour and Social Policies, Marina Calderone, who dialogued with Il Sole 24 Ore journalist Giorgio Pogliotti. In a scenario in which artificial intelligence (AI) is changing employment dynamics, it is important to invest in training, to give workers new skills and to better prepare young people to enter the world of work. Above all, the issue is the ability to accompany them, because it is impossible to do without technology: 'Interactive media must become life partners,' as the minister said.
The mismatch that needs to be bridged between labour demand and supply is fully part of these issues because "today there is no job that does not have a digital component in it", which is why the Minister reiterated the need to raise the level of digital skills throughout the population. Themes that inextricably link school and the world of work and that were attended by provincial councillors Francesca Gerosa and Achille Spinelli.
