   Orsini: to save competitiveness, less bureaucracy, united companies and a European plan

   At the conclusion of the 20th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics, the dialogue between Fabio Tamburini, editor-in-chief of Sole 24 Ore and chairman of the Festival's Scientific Committee, and Emanuele Orsini, president of Confindustria, brought the need for a new plan for the development of the Italian and European industrial economy back to the centre.
   Global challenges - first and foremost, US tariffs and the changes they are generating in global markets and supply chains - are putting the competitiveness of the production system at risk, but Italian industry is being called upon to react: it is time to take action on the drop in investments and exports, on the insufficient use of AI in supply chains, on the crisis in key sectors such as cars and fashion, on overpriced energy, and on the fragmentation of the entrepreneurial system. Italy can still make a difference, but we need rapid intervention and long-term planning in concert with other European countries.

The conference hall of the Fondazione Caritro was sold out, a sign of a lively and attentive interest in a topic that is decisive for the future of our country, a multi-voice reflection on the transformations of the labour market driven by transitions - digital, ecological and demographic - that redefine its boundaries and challenges. These transitions were read and interpreted in the light of four views: youth employment, gender employment, the issue of generations and the geography of territories.

   Children, young, old: the quality of life in the territories

   Social economy at the centre of the Trento Festival of Economics

   The social economy asserts itself as an engine of fair and sustainable development, finding full recognition in the context of the Trento Festival of Economics. The panel "Social Economy, because profit is not enough" brought together authoritative voices from institutions, research and the cooperative world to address one of the most strategic themes for the future of Europe.
   Opening the discussion was Lucia Albano, undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, who reiterated how the social economy is now a pillar of European strategy: 'After the EU Recommendation, Italy is called upon to define an Action Plan. The Ministry is working on a dedicated working group, involving all stakeholders, to define a method of comparison and build a Plan that will be ready by November 2025. Our country is at the forefront, but we need innovative financial instruments, bureaucratic simplifications and advantageous tax measures to fully recognise the value of these realities."

    The decline of fertility in Italy and the world: the lesson of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Economics James J. Heckman

    The 2000 Nobel Prize winner for Economics James J. Heckman, professor and director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development at the University of Chicago, spoke today at the Palazzo della Regione in Trento on the last day of the 20th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics, on the theme "The decline of fertility in Italy and the world". With him on stage was Maria Latella, journalist for Sole 24 Ore and presenter of programmes for Rai and Radio24.
    Heckman started from Malthus, to outline a historical fresco of humanity growing until the end of the 19th century. In the current phase, however, almost everywhere the population is declining, except in Africa and some Latin American countries. The country with the lowest birth rate is South Korea, but even in China the imbalance has become marked: there are more and more old people and fewer and fewer young people. One of the countries with more young people, on the other hand, is Chad. The decline in fertility today affects the most developed countries, so Malthus' thesis that fertility was conditioned by the availability of food is no longer valid. The most important factors are therefore others. Of a social nature, for example, the main one seems to be the greater autonomy of women, who today have more opportunities, more decision-making power, more say. Another important aspect is the fact that the age of first birth is being postponed more and more, due to the fact that more time is spent on education and entry into the world of work.
