Astronaut Parmitano between climate change, satellite communication and the future of space exploration

"The future of space exploration? There is now a very strong interest, political and otherwise, in going back to the Moon, exploring parts we haven't seen yet, to find water. And then there is Mars: covered by Martian sand are large amounts of ice; there you can find traces of what was once life. This is a robotic exploration that has never been done before'. The astronaut and military man Luca Parmitano, pressed by Corriere del Trentino columnist Enrico Franco, thus closed his speech at the Teatro Sociale during the 20th edition of the Festival dell'Economia. A panel that began by talking about climate change as seen and monitored from space, with a warning: it is urgent to limit the damage, we are already late. And as for the European satellite internet, the Iris2 network will arrive in 2030.

Easy times, big problems: Tremonti and the uneasy future of Europe

At the Trento Festival of Economics, the meeting staged this morning at the Cinema Vittoria had the flavour of warning and provocation. On stage, Giulio Tremonti, former Minister of the Economy and now President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, and Peter Gomez, editor of Il Fatto Quotidiano, confronted each other. The title chosen for the event, 'Easy times create weak men and big problems, difficult times create strong men and easy times', anticipated the deep and meditative tone of the dialogue. Between lucid analyses and close exchanges, the dialogue between Tremonti and Gomez highlighted the fractures of our time: the crisis of democracy, the weakness of elites and the return of old threats. A frank confrontation, devoid of easy answers, but capable of posing the essential questions in an era that urgently needs them.

The global industrial situation and cooperation between the US, China and Europe

The global industrial situation and cooperation between the US, China and Europe was the topic at the centre of the panel held this morning in Sala Depero, in the Palazzo della Provincia di Trento, hosted by Stefania Di Bartolomeo, CEO of Physis Investment, Zhiyi He, expert of the Institute of Global Industry of Tsinghua University and professor at Peking University, Paolo Lazzarini, Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer of Amplifon, Roberta Miraglia, head of the Economy and International Politics editorial staff of Il Sole 24 Ore and Lorenzo Stanca, one of the founders of Mindful Capital.
The starting point is Professor Hu's annual snapshot of the world's leading companies, some 48,000 in number, according to which the strongest players are confirmed in the order of the USA, China and Europe (taken as a whole, even if examined state by state). So far, the economies of the major producing countries have grown in parallel with the growth of open markets, and this has become even more pronounced since China's entry into the WTO in the early 2000s, although with the arrival of Xi Jinping the emphasis on openness has cooled somewhat. The US, by virtue of the dollar, its currency of choice, has always met an important share of the domestic market with imports, while maintaining a leading position in services and ceding important shares of public debt to external savers. Trump's new policies have a dramatic impact on this scenario (the word 'obscurantism' resounded in the room) and are a harbinger of recession. However, the new situation could increase trade between Europe and other areas of the world, China itself, but also the rest of South East Asia or sub-Saharan Africa.

Manuel Agnelli, the young Italian rocker still knows how to scratch

Even in times of liquid and immaterial music, of ever-increasing difficulty in finding live spaces and getting noticed in the jungle of the web, young Italian rock resists. This is the message launched tonight by Manuel Agnelli, protagonist at the Teatro Sociale of a meeting for the Fuori Festival spaces, dedicated to the new realities of the Italian scene. At his side was Giovanni Succi, author and artistic director of Carne Fresca, a review for emerging bands, and the youngsters from the band Dlemma, Neyja, Per Asperax and The Whistling Heads, who played short live sets. A positive horizon, in spite of everything, the one painted by Manuel Agnelli looking at the generation of young people between 15 and 30 years old who, for him, have the strength to change the world of music because they have an expressive power he has not felt for years.

Europe between centralism and autonomy: the way of education

In a Europe at the crossroads between the centralist drives that would like a strong Union to be a protagonist on the geopolitical chessboard of the world and the autonomist instances of territories and communities that feel a strong need for self-government, the search for a principle of order for the government of the territory is a priority. Can the continuous and innovative training of public administration personnel help in the search for this principle of order?
The topic was the focus of a discussion at the Festival of Economics, organised by TSM - Trentino School of Management, whose protagonists included the Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani, the Councillor for Autonomy of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Simone Marchiori, the Rector of the University of Trento, Flavio Deflorian, the President of TSM Francesco Barone and the CEO Delio Picciani.

Culture is a lever for sustainability

Environmental, human and social sustainability does not disregard culture. This was the asset of the panel at the Fondazione Caritro: 'Culture as a practice of sustainable development'. Discussing this topic were Massimo Bernardi, director of MUSE, Silvia Bruno of Confindustria Trento, Alberta Giovannini, head of marketing and fundraising at MUSE, Alessandra Schiavuzzi, director of the Cultural Activities and Production Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Rossella Sobrero, president of Koinètica, and Ludovico Solima, professor at the University of Campania L.Vanvitelli, moderated by Sole 24 Ore journalist Andrea Biondi. The United States, China and Europe, Pope Leo XIV and young people: Prodi tries to 'swim in uncertainty'

From the new Pope to the role of the United States, China and Europe, via young people fleeing abroad and new technologies. The former President of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Italy, Romano Prodi, tried to set some milestones in the scenario of great instability in the world today. The appointment "Swimming in uncertainty", on this third day of the 20th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics, was a sell-out at the Teatro Sociale for the dialogue between the economist, politician and university lecturer and Fabio Tamburini, director of Il Sole 24 Ore, Radio 24 and Radiocor, as well as chairman of the Festival's Scientific Committee.

Gender inclusion, a crucial challenge for the world of work also in Trentino

DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) policies, which are increasingly widespread in European companies, are not enough on their own to guarantee greater inclusion of the most disadvantaged categories in the world of work; in fact, a cultural change in our society is necessary. This was discussed today at the Festival dell'Economia during the meeting in the Fondazione Caritro conference hall dedicated to the future of DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) policies in companies. Roberto Busato, director of Confindustria Trento, Francesca Devescovi, corporate business director Feltrinelli Education and Scuola Holden, and Anita Penati, general director of Fondazione Caritro, highlighted the projects that various companies and foundations are implementing in this field with a special focus on what is happening in Trentino.

Deputy Minister Leo's commitment: 'Irpef cut for the middle class'

"On the subject of taxation, we are working to continue lowering the Irpef, this time in favour of the middle class, raising the intermediate rate from 35% to 33% or in any case trying to broaden the bracket, raising it from the current 50,000 to 60,000 euro. A commitment, as part of the implementation of the tax reform, which since the enabling act of August 2023 has seen significant steps forward, with 15 implementing decrees already in the Official Gazette and two on the launching pad, on composition with creditors and regional and local taxes, while other important regulations are on the way with the aim of simplifying the Italian tax system, improving the relationship between the State and citizens, and fostering competitiveness'. This was said by Deputy Minister for Economics and Finance Maurizio Leo in the five-way dialogue at the Buonconsiglio Castle on the subject of tax reform at the Trento Festival of Economics.
