Description
Pupils attending nursery schools and compulsory education up to lower secondary school are eligible for school transport organised by the Autonomous Province of Trento.
School transport is provided by both regular bus services and special services, depending on the local area.
Special services may be provided where urban and suburban regular services are inadequate (i.e. where the distance between the pupil’s home and the bus stop exceeds 1,000 metres; the distance between the bus stop and the school building exceeds 500 metres; the waiting time exceeds 25 minutes from the start of lessons and 20 minutes from the end of lessons) and in accordance with the following criteria:
- the distance from the pupil’s home to the school exceeds 500 metres for nursery school pupils, provided there are at least three applications (for any exemptions, please refer to the circular set out below), and 1,000 metres for primary and lower secondary school pupils; the distance is calculated using the shortest walking route, along roads open to public traffic, by using online land registry data to identify the home and GIS to measure the route;
- the transport service is provided to a single designated school for the purpose of transporting pupils from that specific geographical area.
Applications submitted after 28 February (after the deadline) or applications submitted within the deadline but which do not meet the distance and/or catchment area requirements will be processed subsequently, subject to the availability of the established services.
A school transport pass does not need to be requested if children aged 6 or under use public transport to travel to school accompanied by a paying adult family member (as defined by Provincial Council Resolution No. 2487 of 30 December 2015).

Authorisation for independent use of the school transport service (excluding transport services for nursery schools)
Upon submission of a transport application (whether online or on paper) authorisationis simultaneously granted, for the entire duration of lower secondary education,by the pupil’s guardians(following careful assessment of the child’s age, level of independence and specific circumstances) to use the school transport service independently, and thethe Public Transport Department of the Province and the operators of the school transport service are exempt from liability relating to the fulfilment of the duty of supervision whilst pupils are boarding and alighting from the vehicle and whilst waiting at the designated stop, both on the way to and from school.
It should be noted that this authorisation is deemed to be granted even in the event of any subsequent changes to the requested route. Should the pupil’s guardians not wish to grant this authorisation, or wish to revoke it, they must complete the appropriate form for ‘refusal of authorisation for independent use’.
Restrictions
The fare for the use of the school transport service for pupils is set by a resolution of the Provincial Executive.
For the 2025/2026 school year, the fare is set at 20.00 euros (Provincial Council resolution no. 941 of 11 June 2021).
The pass is valid for the period from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026, allowing free travel within the province of Trento (i.e. the home-to-school route and the use of all scheduled services, urban and inter-urban buses and trains on the Brenner lines (excluding Trenitalia’s long-distance Intercity, Eurocity, Euronight and Frecce services), the Valsugana line and the Trento–Malè line, including school trips.
Furthermore, the travel pass is provided free of charge from the fourth child onwards who uses transport services from nursery schools through to upper secondary schools and vocational training centres. To obtain the fourth travel card free of charge, you must submit an application via the ‘Stanza del Cittadino’ (Citizen’s Office) after verifying your identity using SPID (Public Digital Identity System), CIE (Electronic Identity Card), CNS (National Services Card) or CPS (Provincial Services Card).
