Directions on how to renew your driving licence

Description

Driving licences must be renewed at different expiry dates depending on the category held and the age of the driver. The expiry date is stated on the licence itself.

Renewal consists of an examination to ascertain the physical and psychological requirements for fitness to drive by authorised doctors. In the Province of Trento, the examination may be carried out at the Provincial Agency for Health Services (Azienda Provinciale per i Servizi Sanitari - APSS) or at the offices of driving schools/driving practice agencies where the authorised doctors carry out their activities on a freelance basis.

In the case of particular pathologies or for the renewal of certain licence categories (see below) the medical examination must be carried out at the local medical commission. For all information you may consult the page dedicated to licence renewal in the Local Medical Commission on the APSS website.

Who it's for

The service is intended for people whose driving licence is about to expire.

What to do

To make an ordinary medical examination it is necessary to book an appointment by contacting the CUP, telephoning or accessing the website online.

For the visit to the Local Medical Commission, consult the page dedicated to driving licence renewal in the Local Medical Commission on the APSS website.

Special cases

If a driver who is obliged to renew his or her driving licence at the local medical commission is unable to undergo a medical examination before the expiry of the document, he or she may, after booking the examination, apply for a provisional driving permit valid until the renewal procedures are completed.

Timeframes and deadlines

After the medical examination , the doctor transmits the medical certificate, photo, driver's signature and payment details electronically to the Ministry.

If the examination is successful, the doctor prints a receipt of confirmation of validity and delivers it to the person concerned: the receipt is valid exclusively for driving on Italian territory and until the new licence is received.
Subsequently, the Ministry sends a new licence to the holder's address indicated at the renewal stage, by insured mail at the recipient's expense to be paid to the postman making the delivery. It is also possible to indicate a delivery address other than the residence address.

In cases where it is not possible to transmit the data electronically to the Ministry, the doctor delivers a paper medical report to the user and directs him to the Motor Vehicle Bureau to complete the licence renewal file.
