Driving licence – Renewal

Driving licences must be renewed atdifferent intervals depending onthecategory held and the driver’s age. The expiry date is shown on the licence itself.

Renewal involvesa medicalexaminationcarried out by authorised doctorstoassess the driver’s physical and mental fitness to drive. In the Province of Trento, the examination can be carried out at the Provincial Health Services Agency (APSS) or at the premises of driving schools or driving test centres where authorised doctors practise privately.

In the case of specific medical conditions or for the renewal of certain categories of driving licences (see below), the medical examination must be carried out bya local medical commission. Validity periods for the various categories of driving licence

AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BEdriving licencesmustbe renewed:

• every 10 years until the holder reaches the age of 50
• every 5 years until the holder reaches the age of 70
• every 3 years until the age of 80
• every 2 years after reaching the age of 80

The correspondingspeciallicences(AMS, A1S, A2S, AS, B1S, BS) mustalways be renewed by the local medical commission, every 5 years up to the age of 70, after which the regular renewal intervals apply.  

C1, C1E, C and CElicencesmustbe renewed:

• every 5 years until the age of 65 (the maximum age for renewal by a single medical practitioner is 65)
• every 2 years after reaching the age of 65

After the age of 65, the medical examination to confirm validity must be carried out by a local medical board;

From the age of 65 up to the age of 68, in order to drive road trains and articulated lorries with a maximum authorised mass in laden condition exceeding 20 tonnes using a CE licence, a specific certificate is required, to be obtained annually following a specialist examination by a local medical commission. After the age of 68, you may no longer drive these vehicles.

The correspondingspecialdriving licencesC1S and CS mustalways be renewed at a local medical board and are subject to the standard renewal deadlines.

D1, D1E, D and DEdriving licencesmustbe renewed:

• every 5 years until the age of 60

After the age of 60, D1 or D licences only allow the holder to drive vehicles covered by a B licence, whilst D1E and DE licences only authorise the holder to drive vehicles for which a BE licence is required. 

From the age of 60 up to the age of 68, to drive buses, lorries, articulated lorries, articulated buses and semi-articulated lorries used for passenger transport with a D1, D1E, D and DE to drive buses, lorries, articulated lorries, articulated buses and semi-trailer lorries used for passenger transport, you must obtain a specific certificate each year following a specialist medical examination by the local medical board. After the age of 68, you may no longer drive these vehicles.

From the age of 65, holders of a D or DE licence obtained on or before 30 September 2004 – which authorises the driving of vehicles covered by a C or CE licence, respectively – must comply with the renewal rules applicable to C and CE licences in order to continue driving these vehicles.

The correspondingspeciallicencesD1S and DSmust always be renewed through the local medical commission and are subject to the standard renewal deadlines.

This service is aimed at people whose driving licence is about to expire.

To undergo a routine medical examination, you must book an appointment through theCUP, either by telephone or online via the website.

A driver who is required to renew their driving licence at the local medical board, if they are unable to attend the medical examination before the licence expires, may, after booking the appointment, apply for aprovisional driving licencevaliduntil the renewal procedures have been completed.

The list of documents required for the medical examination is available on the website of the Provincial Health Services Authority, for bothroutine examinationsandexaminations by the Local Medical Commission.

The expiry date of the driving licence is shown on the licence itself.

Following the medical examination, thedoctor submits the medical certificate, the photograph, the licence holder’s signature and the payment details to the Ministry electronically.

If the examination is successful, the doctor prints out the receipt confirming validity and hands it to the applicant: this receipt is valid solely for driving within Italy and remains valid until the new driving licence is received.
The Ministry will then send a new driving licence to the holder’s address as provided during the renewal process, by registered post with charges payable by the recipient to the postman upon delivery. It is also possible to specify a delivery address other than the holder’s residential address.

In cases where it is not possible to transmit the data electronically to the Ministry, the doctor will provide the applicant with a paper medical report and direct them to the Motorisation Authority to complete the driving licence renewal process.
