Description
Driving licences are divided into various categories pursuant to Article 116 of the Road Traffic Act. In order to obtain a driving licence in each category (A, B, C, D, BE, CE, DE), it is necessary to take a specific examination.
The examinations consist of a theory test and/or a practical driving test and, in order to take them, an application must be submitted in accordance with the procedures set out on this page. This procedure concerns private candidates. If you intend to use a driving school, the school itself will be responsible for submitting the application and administering the examinations.
Theory examination
After submitting the application, the candidate has six months to take the theory test. The candidate has two examinations at his or her disposal: if he or she fails the first test he or she may retake it another time, always within the (first) six months from the date of application.
Pink sheet and practical examination
After passing the theory test, the candidate receives the learner's permit and can practise driving.
The learner's permit is valid for twelve months and within that twelve months the candidate may take the practical test three times, but not before at least one month has elapsed since the learner's permit was issued. If the practical test is not passed, it can be repeated, provided that at least one month has elapsed between one test and the next.
In the event that the third driving test is also failed, a new learner's permit may be applied for, on a one-off basis, showing a positive outcome of the theory test. The application must be submitted no later than two months after the expiry date of the previous pink sheet.
Restrictions
- An applicant for a category B driving licence must complete at least six hours of compulsory driving practice at a driving school that issues a certificate of attendance. A candidate who has taken the theory test as a private driver is therefore required to register at a driving school for the mandatory hours of driving and the practical test.
- Minors who have reached the age of 17 and are holders of an A1 or B1 driving licence are permitted, for practice purposes, to drive motor vehicles with a mass not exceeding 3.5 t and in compliance with the power limits laid down for novice drivers. The minor must have completed ten hours of a practical driving course at a driving school and only then, subject to the issuance of the appropriate authorisation, may drive accompanied by a holder of a driving licence category B or higher for at least ten years within the age of 60 years (so-called 'accompanied driving').
