Driving Licence – Obtaining

Driving licences are divided intovarious categoriesin accordance with Article 116 ofthe Highway Code. To obtain a driving licence for each category (AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, C1, C, D1, D, BE, CE, DE), you must submit an application and sit specific tests.

The tests consist of a theory test and/or a practical driving test; to sit these, you must first submittherelevantapplicationin accordance with the procedures set out on this page (online submission is available). This procedure applies to independent candidates. If you intend to use a driving school, the school itself will handle the submission of your application and the organisation of your exams.

Theory test

Once the application has been submitted, the candidate hassix months to sit the theory test. The candidate is allowed two attempts at the theory test: if they fail the first attempt, they may retake it once, provided this is within the (first) six months from the date of application. Please note: for online booking of the theory test, see the instructions set out below in the section ‘How to book your tests’.

Provisional licence and practical test

After passing the theory test, the candidate receives aprovisionaldrivinglicence andmaypractisedriving.

The provisional licence isvalid for twelve months, and within this twelve-month period the candidate may sit the practical test three times, provided that at least one month has elapsed since the date the provisional licence was issued. If the practical test is not passed, it may be retaken, provided that at least one month has elapsed between one attempt and the next.

If the third driving test is also failed, a new provisional licence may be requested, on one occasion only, showing the pass result for the theory test. The application must be submitted no later than the second month following the expiry date of the previous provisional licence.

• Anyone wishing to obtain aCategory Bdriving licence must completeat least six hours of compulsory driving practice at a driving school, which will issue a certificate of attendance. Candidates who have taken the theory test as private candidates are therefore required to enrol at a driving school to complete the compulsory driving lessons and sit the practical test.
• Minorswho have reached the age of 17 and hold a Category A1 or B1 driving licence are permitted, for practice purposes, to drive motor vehicles with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, provided they comply with the power limits set for new drivers. The minor must have completedten hours of practical driving lessons at a driving schooland only then, following the issue of a specific authorisation, may they drive accompanied by a holder of a Category B licence or higher who has held it for at least ten years and is aged 60 or under (so-called ‘accompanied driving’).

Applicants wishing to obtain a driving licence who meet the following requirements:

• residence in Italy(please note that applications may be submitted to the Trento Motorisation Authority by residents of the Province of Trento or neighbouring provinces, or by those who are domiciled in the Province of Trento for study or work purposes);
• agerequirements depending on the type of licence (seelicence categories);
• psychological and physical requirementsdepending on the type of licence applied for, to be verified by undergoing amedical examination;please note that you must not attach the medical history certificate issued by your GP.
• character requirements(see Article 120 ofthe Highway Code, which lists certain offences that prevent a person from obtaining a driving licence).

The application must be completed and submitted by the applicant themselves. If the applicant is a minor, the application must be submitted by a parent.

After carefully reviewing the documentation listed in the section below entitled ‘Documents to be submitted’, residents of the Province of Trento only may submit their application for a driving licence online by completing and submitting the form via the link below, following authentication via SPID, CIE or CPS/CNS.

As an alternative to the online method, to submit your application you can download and complete the relevant form (form TT2112), attach the documentation listed in the ‘Documents to be submitted’ section, and hand it in at the driving licence counter of the Motorizzazione Civile after making an appointment.

Before submitting your application, you must undergo a medical examination to assess your physical and mental fitness to drive. The examination must be carried out by a doctor authorised to conduct driving licence medical examinations (see the list of authorised doctors) ; in the Province of Trento, the examination can be carried out at the Provincial Health Services Agency (APSS); please consult the necessary information regarding the examination. If you have any specific medical conditions that may affect your fitness to drive, you will need to undergo an examination by the local Medical Commission – Article 119 of the Highway Code.

How to book your tests

For candidates enrolled at a driving school, registration is handled directly by the driving school, for both the theory test and the practical test.

For independent candidates, bookings for the theory test for AM/A1/A2/A/B licence categories must be made exclusively – independently – via the following website: https://servizidigitali.provincia.tn.it/lang/it/servizi/patente-di-guida-prenotazione-esami-teoria/access

in accordance with the timetable set by the Office.

Access is via SPID or electronic identity card.

Bookings for the theory test for the above-mentioned driving licence categories that require the use of audio support and/or extended timeare excluded from the online booking system; these must be requested using the forms provided below and by sending an email to the address esamipatenti@provincia.tn.it, stating the details of the application and your full personal details. To book a theory test for driving licences C, C1, D, D1, CE and DE, an email must also be sent toesamipatenti@provincia.tn.it.

For AM/A1/A2/A licence categories only, you can book the practical driving test by sending an email to esamipatenti@provincia.tn.it.

Bookingthe driving test for a Category B licence or higher is handled directly by the driving school, with which the candidate must enrol in order to sit the practical test.

NB: The Office reserves the right to cancel any bookings if the requirements are not met.

Upon request, the theory test may be taken with the use ofan audio aid(by completing the relevant form, which can be downloaded from the ‘Forms’ section of this page).

The following must be attached totheTT2112form, which must be completed in full and signed:

• a recent passport-sized photograph, taken with the head uncovered and showing a full-face view (without spectacles unless required to wear them whilst driving), signed on the reverse by the applicant;
• a valid identity documentand/or a copy of the applicant’scurrentdriving licence and, for applicants who are non-EU nationals,a valid residence permitor receipt confirming the submission of an application for renewal or issue – the original to be presented for inspection, together with a photocopy;
• a computer-generated medical certificate(hard copy) attesting to the applicant’s fulfilment of the psychological and physical requirements for the category of driving licence applied for, dated no more than three months prior to the date of submission of the application for a driving licence (NB: the certificate issued by the Local Medical Commission is valid for 6 months); Please ensure you do not attach the medical history certificate.
• receipt of paymentof the fee for‘Registration for driving licence application’ madevia PagoPA (code T067 ‘THEORY TEST FOR DRIVING LICENCE APPLICATION’ (€26.40 + €16.00) (TRENTO AREA));
• forunderage candidates, a copy of a valididentity documentbelonging tothe parent or guardianwho signed form TT2112; 
• if theapplicationissubmitted by a representative, attach the fully completedproxy form, a photocopy of the valid identity document of the applicant (the principal) and the representative’s identity document;
• if you are requesting to sit the theory test withaudio support, please attach thespecificapplicationform, which can be downloaded from the ‘Forms’ section of this page, and theself-declaration in lieuof certification for people with specific learning difficulties (where applicable).

Pleasenote: 

• if the applicant arrives at the counter with an application lacking the documentation listed above, the application cannot be accepted and the applicant will have to make a new appointment to submit it
• when attending the appointment for the issue of the computerised medical certificate, amedical history certificate issued by their GP must be handed to the authorised doctor. This medical history certificate is not sufficient for submitting the application and must not be uploaded to the ‘Stanza del cittadino’ portal, nor presented at the Motorisation Authority’s driving licence counter;
• A €16.00 revenue stamp must be affixed to the application form forthe theory test with audio support; Alternatively, you may attach to the form the receipt for payment made via PagoPA using code N019 ‘BOLLI’ (people with specific learning difficulties are exempt from paying this fee);
• Whenbooking the practical test, you must make a further payment via PagoPA (code N019 “PRACTICAL TEST FOR DRIVING LICENCE” (€16.00)) and submit the relevant receipt.

The application may be submitted at any time.
