Description
The three most common areas of animal reproduction in the province of Trento:
1) Application of artificial insemination on one's own account/third party.
- Animals can be fertilised by veterinarians and practical operators, if authorised by the relevant region, which will enter them on special lists and assign them a specific unique identification code. In order to apply, practical operators must be qualified to carry out artificial insemination following a specific course organised by authorised bodies.
- Veterinarians, on the other hand, must be enrolled in the professional register.
- Fertilisation acts must be registered on a bulletin, which, for bovine semen, must be requested from the Provincial Breeders' Federation, while for equine semen veterinarians must request it from the Agricultural Service.
2) Taurine stud stations - bull riding licence
- A private taurine stud station is defined as a stable where there is a pedigree bull, qualified for natural mating, which is used only on cows in the stable or on the farm.
- This type of stud station does not require authorisation, but the manager must report the presence of the bull in the stable to the Agricultural Service, ensure that the bull is licensed and certify the mounts on a bulletin board.
- The bull must be enrolled in the studbook of the breed to which it belongs as a breeding animal and in the Province of Trento it must also be in possession of the natural mating licence issued by the Servizio Agricoltura.
- A taurine public stud station is defined as an authorised stable where there is a pedigree bull, qualified for natural service, which is used on other breeders' cows (third-party). This type of station follows the rules for horse stud stations, which are given below and to which reference is made.
The bulletin must be requested from the Agricultural Service of the Province using the forms below. The vignette for the private stud farm consists of 2 bills, one for the breeder and one for the Agricultural Service, while that for the public stud farm consists of 3 bills, one for the breeder, one for the station keeper and one for the Agricultural Service. The bill serves to register the calf in the herd book. It must be kept by the station-keeper until it is exhausted, who must then request another one, returning the old one.
3) Horse breeding stations - stallion qualification
- If a horse breeder wishes to use pure-bred male breeding stock, he must apply for authorisation to manage the stud farm and must check that the stallion has also been authorised in the Province of Trento. He must record the mounts on a register.
- For the equine species, natural private stud farms are governed by the same rules as public stud farms, i.e. they must be authorised by the Agricultural Service and certified by the area veterinarians as suitable.
- The authorisation is valid for five years and therefore renewal must be requested.
- The stallion used in the province of Trento must be approved for natural service by the Servizio Agricoltura, which certifies that it is entered in the breed studbook as a breeding animal and that it is suitable for service (health requirements certified by the veterinarian). The provincial licence must be applied for by the stallion owner and must be renewed every 5 years.
- The stud farm operator must, at the beginning of each year, send the notification of stallion employment (form below) to the Agricultural Service, stating which stallions he is using and enclosing a copy of the veterinary certificate for the current year, as well as the bills issued in the previous year.
The vignette (natural stud intervention certificate) consists of bills in 3 copies each, one for the keeper, one for the breeder who owns the mare and one for the Agricultural Service. The bill serves for the registration of the foal in the studbook. The bulletin is to be kept by the keeper until it is exhausted, who will then request another one, returning the old one.
