Description
On 24 October, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) presents the conclusions of theGender Equality Index. This year, the index shows the best overall progress on gender equality in the EU since its creation ten years ago. Out of a maximum of 100 points, the EU score averages 70.2, up from 68.6 in 2022. The disparity between the Member States is significant: some see significant improvements, others experience stagnation or even a loss of points in their score. The percentage of women on company boards has risen to 33 %, which corresponds to the percentage of women in national parliaments.
Věra Jourová, Vice-President for Values and Transparency, said: 'We see the most significant progress towards gender equality in the EU in ten years. This shows that legislative action is working. However, much remains to be done, for example, to address the gender pay gap and gender-based violence. On this last point, I call on the co-legislators to reach a constructive agreement on our proposal on combating violence against women and domestic violence, for the safety of all women and girls."
Helena Dalli, Commissioner for Equality, said: "Despite multiple crises that have challenged women's empowerment and empowerment, the figures presented today show that we have stayed the course in implementing our strategy for gender equality. In order for women and girls to fulfil themselves, occupy prominent positions and be free, we must not lose sight of the challenges still unresolved. It is crucial to support the Commission's legislative proposal to combat violence against women."
As part of the European Parliament's Gender Equality Week, Commissioner Dalli will today hold an exchange of views with members of the European Parliament's FEMM Committee. On 25 October, she will participate in the Committee of the Regions conference on 'Local and regional strategies for closing the gender gap in politics'.
