Description
In Italy, the classification of vine varieties for wine production is contained in the National Register of Vine Varieties.
With theState-Regions Agreement of 25 July 2002, the Regions and Autonomous Provinces were assigned the competence to carry out the classification of vine varieties suitable for cultivation within their own administrative units on the basis of the criteria defined in the above-mentioned Agreement.
The current classification provides that for each administrative unit, wine grape vine varieties are assigned to one of the following classes:
1. varieties suitable for cultivation: in order to achieve particular wine-growing policy objectives, these varieties may in turn be subdivided into recommended varieties and permitted varieties;
2. varieties under observation: these are those varieties on which tests of suitability for cultivation are being carried out in the administrative unit.
Article 81 of EU Regulation 1308/13 provides that Member States may only classify as wine grape varieties those varieties that belong to the species Vitis vinifera or result from a cross between the species Vitis vinifera and other species of the genus Vitis.
Vine varieties resulting from crosses of Vitis vinifera with other species of the genus Vitis are included in a separate list in order to allow the proper use of grapes in accordance with the Community legislation set out inArticle 93 of Regulation (EU) No 1308/13 andArticle 33 of Law No 238 of 12 December 2016.
The list of varieties suitable for cultivation and the list of varieties under observation for the production of wine in the Autonomous Province of Trento were last updated by resolution of the Provincial Council no. 435 of 19 March 2021.
