Description
9 May 1950:"Europe cannot be made all at once, nor will it be built all at once; it will arise from concrete realisations that first create de facto solidarity (R. Schuman)."
Schuman's proposal is considered the birth certificate of the European Union.
Europe Day (9 May) celebrates peace and unity in Europe. It recalls the historic declaration of the then French Foreign Minister, with the intention of laying the foundations for a peaceful future on the continent, based on a new form of political cooperation between European states.
Since 1950, many treaties have been signed and numerous enlargements have taken place. The European Union today has 27 member states that more than ever, also through the Conference on the Future of the EU, want to involve European citizens in this integration process.
In order to celebrate Europe Day every year, in May, the European Commission's Information Centres Europe Direct Trentino and CDE - Trento organise the Siamo Europa Festival together with other bodies dealing with Europe in the territory.
