Description
Since the early 1980s, the Autonomous Province of Trento has been running training initiatives on the organisation, technique and safety of forestry work.
This service is mainly aimed at those involved in forest cutting and land maintenance, both in the private and public sectors.
The provincial administration directly manages this activity with the aim of providing concrete support to companies in the sector, particularly with regard to aspects related to the training obligations provided for by the work safety regulations(Legislative Decree 81/08).
The courses cover the rules for the correct use and maintenance of the main forestry machinery and equipment, techniques and safety rules on cutting forest trees, and also those relating to wood and timber extraction with forestry tractors, winches, and cable cranes.
A specific identity is assumed by the training course for forestry site managers, the so-called 'licence', which is necessary to be able to conduct forestry operations on public property.
The training activities are carried out by a staff of forestry workers-instructors and specialised technicians.
The courses have a predominantly practical focus and are carried out in real work situations (forest utilisation sites) using up-to-date machinery and specific equipment.
The main headquarters of these activities are located in Borgo Valsugana at S. Giorgio and in the nearby Val di Sella.
Objectives
- encourage the adoption of rational and safe working systems
- qualify operators to carry out interventions with a limited impact on forest ecosystems
- to contribute to the support of a professionalism that is indispensable for an efficient and productivity-conscious management of the provincial forest heritage
- to inform on criteria for the valorisation of wood production

Construction activity
Parallel to the qualification and refresher courses, the team of instructors is engaged in cutting and hauling work on the forest plots where the course exercises take place. This work represents a "gymnasium" to refine the practical professionalism of the instructor staff and is also an opportunity to experiment with working methods and machines.
The technology transfer activity
The transfer of experience and information to operators is another area of activity, which has been carried out for some time thanks to the numerous contacts with national and international companies, research and training institutes.
This is made possible by constant updating on technological and organisational developments.
