Description
In addition to basic research, which has as its primary objective the advancement of knowledge and the theoretical understanding of the relationships between the different variables at play in a given process, targeted research, which is carried out with the aim of finding practical and specific solutions, is of strategic importance for the innovation of health systems.
In order to be effective and productive, i.e. capable of rapidly translating the results into improved actions for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation activities, finalised health research, including that on health systems, must be characterised by pervasiveness, i.e. by the ability to operate transversally in the health services through the involvement of as many professionals as possible, with the logic of improving their skills for the benefit of the population treated.
Mainly, thehealth research and innovation activities carried out in the Province of Trento are implemented through
- participation in programmes and calls for tenders issued by the European Union
- participation in programmes and calls for tenders issued by the Italian State (e.g. the Ministry of Health pursuant to Article 12 of Legislative Decree 502/1992, ...)
- the approval of provincial health research and innovation projects, pursuant to Article 24 of Provincial Law no. 16 of 23 July 2010
- the implementation of initiatives financed by the Single Research Fund provided for by Provincial Law no. 14/2005
- clinical trials supported and financed by the pharmaceutical industry or other institutions/private subjects
- the performance of teaching, research and experimentation activities on health-related topics, or support for the performance of the same activities by other local public and private institutions.
These activities, in the Trentino model, are carried out with a synergic approach between the provincial government, universities, research bodies, institutions and enterprises.
The Health and Social Policy Departmenti of the Province, together with theProvincial Agency for Health Services and the other branches of the Provincial Health Service, play the important role of promotion and liaison in respect of all these actions, fostering the development of a coordinated and integrated network of scientific skills and resources.
This contributes to the innovation of the provincial health system, to the cultural and professional growth of operators, and to the active involvement of patients in the validation of health treatments. It is also considered strategic to develop processes of convergence and synergy between the public sector and private investors, favouring the establishment of supply chains between the research circuit, the production circuit, the training circuit and the system of services pertaining to the Autonomous Province of Trento's health service.

Other Centres
- CeRiN Centre for Neurocognitive Rehabilitation of the University of Trento
CeRiN's activities are based on the inseparable coexistence of clinical, educational and research (clinical and basic) activities in cognitive neuroscience, as this coexistence guarantees constant innovation in clinical practice. The results of research projects increase our knowledge of the relationship between mind and brain. They are then transposed into clinical practice and become part of educational activities.
- CIMeC Interdepartmental Mind/Brain Centre of the University of Trento
Researchers at CIMeC study the organisation of the brain by analysing its functional, structural and psychological characteristics under normal and pathological conditions. State-of-the-art instrumentation includes functional neuroimaging, MEG, EEG, NIRS, TMS and eye-tracking instrumentation, alongside systems for studying kinematics.
The CIMeC recently ranked as the leading Italian research unit in cognitive neuroscience.
- CIBIO Centre for Integrated Biology of the University of Trento
CIBIO is a Research Centre within which research is carried out in four areas that represent the latest frontier of biomedical research: Cancer Biology & Genomics, Cell & Molecular biology, Microbiology & Synthetic Biology, Neurobiology & Development.
- BIOtech Biomedical Technologies of the University of Trento
BIOtech intends to promote, foster and coordinate the research and training activities carried out within the University of Trento in the field of biomedical sciences and technologies, acting as a reference for interaction with external private and public partners, research bodies, companies, health institutions - School of General Medicine of the Autonomous Province of Trento
Specific Training in General Medicine is managed by the Autonomous Province of Trento through the Provincial Order of Doctors - Surgeons and Dentists of Trento.
