Description
The geological map of the Autonomous Province of Trento constitutes a very important basic tool for knowledge of the Trentino territory: it provides preparatory information for the analysis of geological hazards, the planning and management of the soil and subsoil, and the design of works and infrastructures.
The union of the geological surveys carried out for the realisation of different projects since the early 1990s and in the following twenty years of surveys and updates, has led to the elaboration today of a basic geological map at a scale of 1:10,000 and a single legend for the entire Trentino territory. The geological surveys of the CARG-PAT project for the western sector of Trentino contribute to this mapping, while the eastern sector is covered by the surveys carried out in the period 2006-2010 for the Carta della Pericolosità project.
In the southern sector of our territory, on the other hand, the surveys are the result of the elaboration of a database created from the Guidelines of the CARG Project and integrated with the information for the realisation of the Synthesis Hazard Map, the latter currently in the preliminary adoption phase.
THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: HOW A GEOLOGICAL MAP IS CREATED
At the bottom of the page is a short informative video to provide a clear, visual and evocative understanding of the role of the geologist in geological mapping (produced by the Geological Survey of PAT in collaboration with the Press Office).
Geological surveying by geologist surveyors involves the inspection of a given area and the collection of all possible information on its geological constitution. The colour, thickness and composition of a rock or sediment, the possible presence of planes of discontinuity, fractures or faults. Recognition of the fossil or mineral content. By observing the layering of a rock, the surveyor can position the outcrop in space by measuring the layering, traditionally using a geologist's compass. The result is the graphic and symbolic representation of the geology of an area through the use of special graphic symbols that are described in the corresponding legend. This is how the Geological Map was born, an indispensable tool for understanding the structure of an area, starting from the knowledge of a rock, its origin, what it is composed of, how extensive it is, identifying the most recent superficial deposits, their genesis and defining the geomorphological structure of the area and its evolutionary processes.
The Geological Map of the Autonomous Province of Trento covers the entire Trentino territory and derives from specific studies and geological surveys at a scale of 1:10,000 carried out as part of the larger national project known as the CARG Project.
The numerous and precious pieces of information contained in it are available for application purposes, to implement a correct planning and management of the territory and for the reduction and mitigation of hydrogeological risk.
CONSULTATION
It is possible to consult online the representation of the important geological heritage of our province by means of the WebGis application, which allows you to view and query the individual layers that make up the Geological Database. From the WebGis it is possible to download the data in various formats (TIFF, high-resolution TIFF, PDF, PDF with Legend and Shapefile), according to sections at a scale of 1: 10,000. In September 2022, the database was updated with regard to the PEG (Little Ice Age) theme.
A WMS service for GIS is also available at the following address (active display from scale 1:50,000): https://geoservices.provincia.tn.it/agol/services/geologico/BDG00_ALL/MapServer/WMSServer?
WARNING: the Geological Map Database is a continuously updated product; it provides a guideline document of the geology of the Trentino territory, which can be periodically updated and integrated by the Geological Survey through the inclusion of new data and information that external users can also provide by sending an email to the following address : geo.wm@provincia.tn.it
