LIFE+ TEN project: species protection demonstration action - improvement of ecological corridors in the Adige Valley
The situation
The Adige Valley is one of the largest valley furrows in the Alpine arc. At its bottom flows the Adige River, which has been straightened and canalised since the mid-19th century. This important watercourse is surrounded by an environment consisting almost everywhere of intensive cultivation punctuated by settlements and is crossed by numerous communication routes: roads, motorways and railways.
The problem
The current environmental layout of the Adige Valley represents a serious obstacle to the movements and expansion of its distribution area that some large mammals, some of which are of Community interest, are manifesting in the Alpine Arc.
Brown bears(Ursus arctos), wolves(Canis lupus) and golden jackals(Canis aureus), but also ungulates such as deer (Cervus elaphus) and roe deer(Capreolus capreolus) manage to move from one side of the large valley to the other only with great difficulty and danger for themselves but also for motor vehicles and railway convoys.
Objective of the action
At the "Foci dell'Avisio" site, two strips of woodland will be created along the sides of the floodplain that receives the watercourse and represents the only true "natural corridor" present in the entire stretch of the Adige valley between Trento and Bolzano.
The wooded strips are intended to facilitate the passage of animals, significantly reducing disturbance from the surrounding countryside and urbanised areas, while at the same time offering them resting and resting areas
Expected results:
- A significant enhancement of the functionality of the Avisio torrent floodplain as an "ecological corridor".
