Description
LIFE+ TEN project: habitat protection demonstration action: promotion of restoration actions for mills (6410) and peat bogs (7XXX)
The habitat
Molinieti (grasslands formed by the graminaceous plant Molinia caerulea) and peat bogs are environments of great scientific and conservation value that in Trentino are still fairly well conserved, above all in the mountains, while much rarer are the stations at the bottom of the valley that still host these environmental types.
The problem
In the past, the wetlands on the valley floor were mown in order to obtain litter for livestock and sometimes even grazed. The abandonment of these traditional practices has led to their gradual invasion by trees and shrubs, but above all by swamp reed(Phragmites australis), with the consequent disappearance of plant species typical of these environments, such as orchids, sphagnum and insectivorous plants.
Objective of the action
In order to counteract the negative evolution of molinia grasslands and peat bogs at the bottom of the valley, extraordinary clearing interventions will be implemented in three sites in the upper Valsugana area, support for mowing and grazing practices, fight against "alien" plant species and repopulation with specimens of plants characteristic of molinia grasslands and peat bogs.
Expected results:
- restoration of flora and vegetation in molinia meadows and peat bogs;
- increase in the number of applications for the restoration and mowing of wet meadows submitted by farmers on the Rural Development Plan of the Autonomous Province of Trento
