Description

LIFE+ TEN project: habitat protection demonstration action: promotion of restoration activities for dry meadows (habitat 6210*) and hay meadows (habitats 6510, 6520)

Habitats

Meadows are artificial environments, created and maintained by mowing, of particular value as they are home to animals and plants of community interest such as many orchids but also birds such as the corncrake(Crex crex) the little shrike(Lanius collurio) and the ortolan shrike(Emberiza hortulana), and bats such as the Blyth's warbler(Myotis blythii), thedasycneme warbler (Myotis dasycneme) and the greater warbler(Myotis myotis).

The problem

The meadows in Trentino are strongly reducing and changing: some are abandoned to forest encroachment, some are massively fertilised and sown with fodder species to increase their productivity, and some are transformed into more profitable crops.

Objective of the action

The action is implemented in the SPAs IT3120095 Bocca d'Ardole and IT3120150 Talpina-Brentonico, on Monte Baldo. Meetings will be held with private owners to publicise the meadow protection measures of the Rural Development Plan and the creation of a mowing association will be promoted. In addition, public meadow areas overgrown by bushes and trees will be recovered, and the seeds of local herbaceous species will be collected, multiplied and conserved for use in meadow reconstitution operations.

Expected results:

  • adherence of local administrations to the measures foreseen by the Provincial Rural Development Plan for the recovery of publicly owned dry meadows and hay meadows;
  • increase in the number of applications for the recovery of meadows and adhesion to the multi-year commitment for their conservation mowing submitted by farmers on the Provincial Rural Development Plan;
  • creation of a local society of farmers to maintain the meadows in the Monte Baldo Natura 2000 sites.
