Description

LIFE+ TEN project: species protection demonstration action - safeguarding black grouse populations

The species

The black grouse(Tetrao tetrix), a species of Community interest, is a Galliform that in southern Europe is linked to the mountainous environments of the Alps and the Balkans. In Trentino the species can be found on all the main mountain groups, in sparse high mountain woods alternating with alpine meadows and patches of rhododendrons.

The problem

The threats to this bird are of two types

  • climatic changes that result in the mountains in the form of intense and 'out-of-season' weather events
  • habitat changes resulting from the progressive abandonment of traditional agricultural and pastoral practices such as cattle herding, cutting and harvesting hay, and controlling the advance of trees and bushes on pastures.

Objective of the action

In the "Tre Cime del Monte Bondone" site, to re-qualify singing arenas and feeding areas for black grouse thanks to the partial and selective cutting of the dwarf pine(Pinus mugo) bushes that have invaded the area, so as to allow the subsequent reconstitution on the "recovered" areas of the alpine grasslands originally present.

Expected results:

  • Environmental restoration intervention in an area of strategic importance for the black grouse population present on the Monte Bondone - Monte Stivo mountain range.
