Description
LIFE+ TEN project: species protection demonstration action - protecting birds of prey from electrocution
The situation
Trentino is crossed by numerous high and medium voltage power lines whose metal support structures are regularly exploited as supports on which to roost by large birds of prey such as the eagle owl(Bubo bubo) and the black kite(Milvus migrans), both species of Community interest.
The problem
The habit of many birds to use metal pylons as perches is dangerous especially for species with large wing openings, such as birds of prey. In fact, the large dimensions encourage contact between the outstretched wings and the live elements during landing and take-off, resulting in electrocution of the animals. The mechanical impact with wires during flight in poor visibility conditions also contributes to making power lines dangerous for large flyers.
Objective of the action
In the Adige Valley - between Zambana Vecchia (Municipality of Zambana) and the locality of Vela (Municipality of Trento) - the risk of electrocution for birds will be reduced by modifying some stretches of low and medium voltage lines, in cooperation with SET Distribuzione Spa.
Specifically, the current non-insulated overhead conductors will be replaced with an insulated overhead cable of the Elicord and pre-stranded type, the conductor insulation by means of suitable insulating tapes (OLIT type), the total disconnection of a line section by interrupting the continuity of the conductors (opening of dead runs) on the branch pylon, etc.
Expected results
- Substantial mitigation of the danger of power lines to large birds with a consequent significant reduction in mortality caused by electrocution and impacts.
