VERKKO - European network for safer, greener, and digital traffic management, intermodal freight, and cross-border mobility improvements along the TEN-T corridors.

General information

The VERKKO project participates in the international partnership of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme in order to support the following areas of intervention, useful for the provincial road network

  • DSI (Data System Interface): platform based on the DATEX II protocol, for the connection of data from all the sensors installed on the Trentino road network, with the Italian national NAP (National Access Point) system.
  • VMS (Variable Message Signs) enhancement: updating of the PMVs (Variable Message Signs) with new graphic panels and a new communication protocol (for message control and diagnosis) univocal for all provincial suppliers and interoperable in accordance with the European DATEX II protocol. This activity is in continuity with what was started in the MERIDIAN project.
  • WIMS: (Weight-In Motion System): a dynamic weigh-in-motion system for goods traffic to preserve roads and bridges.
  • ADR (Agreement Dangerous Goods) Tracking System: for the management of dangerous goods traffic, especially for simultaneous transit through tunnels and areas with a high environmental impact.
  • SSRS (Slightly Salted Road System): a network of weather stations connected with the provincial weather forecast system to reduce the winter use of salt on mountain roads.
  • Low-Energy solutions for Traffic Surveys: the development of new technologies for traffic surveys at particular points on the road network.

Goals

The overall objective of the VERKKO project is to improve the management and safety of Trentino's provincial road network through the integration of advanced data monitoring systems, up-to-date information panels and technologies for the dynamic weighing and control of freight traffic, in line with national and European standards
