The choice to have a child, as Istat confirms, is often postponed for economic or social reasons, thus creating a gap between the real family and the desired one. How can we reverse this trend? What strategies are needed to promote youth employment and the birth rate? This afternoon in Trento, at the Festival of the Family, scholars and experts from various disciplines spoke about it during a seminar organised by Tsm-Trentino School of Management.
According to a survey conducted in 2023 by Area Studi Legacoop and Ipsos, the problem of under-natality is perceived as urgent and challenging by 74% of Italians and clashes with the desire to have children, which is also clearly expressed by young people: 7 out of 10 would like at least two. The main causes of this worrying trend include: low salaries and the rising cost of living, job instability and job insecurity, the lack of public support for the costs of raising children, the lack of widespread and accessible services for families, and finally the fear of losing one's job, which is higher among women.
