International driving licence

International driving licences are required to drive in countries where such documents are required, and are issued upon presentation of an Italian driving licence. The validity period depends on the country of destination (usually three years from the date of issue for countries party to the Vienna Convention, or one year for countries party to the Geneva Convention), or it may state the expiry date of the driving licence itself, if this is earlier than the periods indicated.

People who hold an Italian driving licence.

• Book an appointment at the Motorizzazione Civile offices; see the section below entitled ‘ACCESS THE SERVICE’; Please note: within the Filavia appointment booking app, select the service‘DRIVING LICENCES (EXCLUDING CONVERSIONS)’.
• Complete and submit the documents listed in the ‘Documents to be submitted’ section.
• Processing time: at least one week

The PAGOPA code associated with the fee is: 

• T004 “Issue of international driving permit and licence” (TRENTO AREA).

NB: Before proceeding with payment, please check that you have selected TRENTO AREA and not NATIONAL.

To make the payment, you must use PAGOPA via “the motoring portal”; see:

• complete form ‘Application for driving licence renewal examination and other requests TT 746’ (complete both copies);
• the original Italian driving licence for inspection and a photocopy thereof;
• two recent passport-sizedphotographs on a white background, with the head uncovered, on non-thermal paper and signed on the back (if the application is not submitted directly by the applicant, one photograph must be certified by the local council) (you can use the self-service photo booth available at the Motor Vehicle Registration Office);
• a €16.00 revenue stamp (to be affixed to the international driving licence);
• receipt of payment made via PAGOPA for €10.20 + €16.00 (see previous section);
• if the application is not submitted by the applicant in person, form TT 746 (signed by the applicant) must be accompanied by a power of attorney on plain paper and by valid identity documents, either originals or photocopies, of both the person granting the power of attorney and the person acting on their behalf.
