Description
Article 128 of the Road Traffic Act provides that if doubts arise as to the persistence of theoretical/practical knowledge or psychophysical requirements relating to the driving licence, a revision of the document may be ordered.
Possible types of licence revision
- revision for psychophysical requirements: obligation to undergo an examination by a local driving licence medical commission. It may be ordered by the Motor Vehicle Authority following reports from supervisory or health authorities, or by the Government Commissioner's Office or Prefectures for violations of Article 186 (Driving under the influence of alcohol) and Article 187 (driving in a state of psycho-physical alteration due to the use of drugs) of the Highway Code or Article 75 of Presidential Decree 309/90 (possession of drugs);
- review for zeroing of driving licence points and/or review for accumulation of violations: obligation to take a theoretical (quiz) and practical (driving test) examination if you run out of points on your driving licence and/or commit 3 violations resulting in the loss of at least 5 points each within the space of a year (compulsory review under Article 126 bis, section 6 of the Highway Code). If the test is not taken on time, the driving licence (all licences + CQC and KB) is suspended and withdrawn by the police;
- review for verification of technical requirements: obligation to undergo a theoretical (quiz) and practical (driving test) examination following an accident, if the assessment of the police report raises doubts about the driver's technical knowledge
- revision of both psychophysical and technical requirements: if, following an accident, the assessment of the report received from the police forces raises doubts about the driver's technical knowledge;
- revision for licence conversion. Where provided for by bilateral international agreements, the conversion of non-EU licences may be subject to confirmation by means of a technical revision examination (quiz + practical test);
- driving test: renewal of licences that have expired for more than 5 years is subject to passing a practical driving test.
