To practise as a beautician, you must obtain the relevant professional qualification after passing a specific examination.

Exam session schedule for 2026 

  • 7 to 25 September 2026: opening of the call for applications from candidates
  • 5–6–7 October 2026: practical test, subject to the number of registered candidates, at the ‘Opera Armida Barelli’ accredited training institution in Rovereto (the detailed timetable will be finalised based on the number of registered candidates)
  • 12–13 October 2026: interview in the classrooms of the Department of Education and Culture of the Autonomous Province of Trento

Conduct of the examination

The professional qualification examination is organised by the examination board and consists of a theoretical test and a practical test, the latter to be taken only after the former has been passed.

Theoretical test
The theoretical test may be conducted, at the Commission’s discretion, either through an individual interview or by means of written tests in the form of open-ended and/or closed-ended questions on the following subjects: business management, chemistry and cosmetology, electrology, dietetics, dermatology, anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and electromechanical equipment for aesthetic use.
The minimum pass mark for progression to the practical examination is 6/10.

Practical test
The practical test is a hands-on assessment lasting 3 hours, during which the candidate will perform a facial treatment and a body treatment on a model of their choice. The minimum pass mark is 6/10.

The candidate will be awarded the qualification if they pass both tests.
Candidates who pass the first test but fail to obtain the qualification due to absence or a fail mark in the second test may request to sit only the test in which they received a fail mark, a second time in one of the subsequent sessions, subject to a request on plain paper sent from their email address to the certified email address (PEC) of the Vocational Training, Tertiary Education and System Functions Service (serv.formazione@pec.provincia.tn.it), attaching proof of identity. This application must be made during the subsequent application periods for the qualifying examination, within one year of receiving the unsuccessful result, and may only be made once.

To sit the exam,you mustcomplete the online application form within the specified application period andpay the registration fee of €75.00 (non-refundable) via“PagoPA  ’, stating the payment reference ‘Qualifying examination for the self-employed profession of beautician’.

Who it's for

Applications may be submitted by candidates who are of legal age and by parents on behalf of their minor children.

Admission to the professional qualification examination is open to those who have completed one of the following courses:

  • a professional qualification as a beautician following a three-year vocational education and training programme, followed by a 400-hour professional qualification course;
  • a professional qualification as a beautician following a three-year vocational education and training programme, followed by a vocational diploma in the beauty sector;
  • a professional qualification as a beautician following a two-year vocational education and training programme, followed by a 900-hour qualification course;
  • a three-year period of qualified work as an employee, active partner or family member working in a beauty therapist’s business, followed by a 480-hour professional qualification course. The period of work must have been carried out within the five years prior to enrolment on the professional qualification course;
  • completion of an apprenticeship, at a beauty salon, in accordance with current legislation, of the duration specified in the relevant sectoral collective agreements, followed by a one-year period of work as a qualified employee, active partner or family assistant, and a 480-hour professional qualification course
  • a professional qualification as a beautician following a two- or three-year course of vocational education and training, followed by a one-year period of work as a qualified employee, active partner or family member at a beauty salon
