Description
The practical knowledge that constitutes the 'art of dry stone walls' has been handed down in rural communities and bears witness to the methods used, from prehistoric times to the present day, to optimise local human and natural resources. Drystone structures are in perfect harmony with the environment and play a vital role in preventing landslides, floods and avalanches, combating erosion and desertification of the land, improving biodiversity and creating the best microclimatic conditions for agriculture.
Within the Mountain Academy, an area of Tsm - Trentino school of management, the training body of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Trentino Dry Stone School has been set up, composed of a working group that includes various professional figures linked to the sector. The aims of the School are the conservation, dissemination and transmission to the new generations of traditional knowledge and skills, connected to the construction and restoration of dry-stone walls and other types of dry-stone artefacts; the creation of a specific professional figure with theoretical and practical skills, capable of constructing or recovering dry-stone artefacts of various types and of high quality; and education on dry-stone landscapes, disseminating knowledge and awareness of the peculiar characteristics and values, functions and potential attributable to such landscapes and territories.
