Description
This volume collects the proceedings of the conference, held in 1999 on the initiative of the Province of Trento and the municipal administration of Tesero with the collaboration of the Association of Friends of the Crib, on the figure of the 17th-century Tesero priest Giambattista Michi and his activity as a collector of sacred songs linked to the popular custom of Christmas and epiphany quests.
The essays contained in this volume study and document ritual events that attest to the outcome in the popular world of the provisions and initiatives of the Council of Trent. It is in fact the weight and force of the Counter-Reformation (or Catholic Reformation as some want to call it) that introduced, and in many cases imposed, the ritual behaviours examined by the various researchers at the conference. The volume is supplemented by a CD with a selection of musical examples recorded 'in the field' by the various researchers. One fact alone is capable of making us understand the importance of this research: the Christmas-epiphanic melodies from the Michi collection, reported within the volume, number around 300 and almost all of them are practically unpublished.
