Language of science, science of language

Report edited by Elvira Zuin. Autonomous Province of Trento, Iprase, 2016

Description

The relationship between language and science has also become an object of attention in the world of education, which considers both the aspects of its more direct competence - without mastering the language instrument it is difficult to learn mathematics and science - and those inherent to the exercise of the right to information, health, political participation. It is a complex issue that has suffered from years of separateness of the two fields, language and science, of non-dialogue, of mutual mistrust, in the cultural and scholastic tradition.

LES offered Trentino schools in the second cycle of education the opportunity to experiment with the integration of language, mathematics and science in educational projects that stand at the crossroads of numerous challenges, of a cultural, educational and organisational nature. The 70 teachers and more than 400 students from the 22 classes that took part in the experiment worked in teams, using laboratory methodologies and digital technologies, tackling mathematical-scientific topics from the point of view of their content and, at the same time, the texts with which they are communicated. The results achieved are encouraging both for the students' learning and the teachers' professional growth, and the LES project is now proposed as a model to be transferred to the entire school system.
