The agro-sylvo-pastoral economy that developed in Trentino, as large tracts of arable land were not available, has over the past centuries given a certain importance to cattle breeding and the exploitation of forests. Thus, in the collaborative spirit that characterises mountain communities, the villages managed themselves with the famous rule charters, the subject of various studies in recent years. Continuing along this line, this publication aims instead to present to a non-specialist public the principles on which community exploitation of the forest and pasture resources of the Trentino territory was based between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. Leafing through these very well-documented pages on the territorial situation and its exploitation in the age of the Enlightenment, the Napoleonic and Habsburg governments up to the civic uses (also with reproductions of historical documents, prints, maps and photographs), it is easier to understand how the collective use of natural resources has now become an integral part of our being Trentino people, even assuming an identity value.
